Who we are

“We acknowledge that we live and work on the the unceded territories of the Sinixt, sn̓ʕaýckstx, to the west of the Great Rockies and in among the high peaks and valleys of the west Kootenays that form the interior temperate rainforest we know and love. We wish to acknowledge that the Sinixt are still here and as an indigenous population, are not extinct. It is from their stories and traditions that we continue to learn and share what we know of this land.”

Forage and Fodder sprang to life in early 2025 through Heather and Tomas who, after spending years in the forest together, wanted to share the benefits with others in their community. The pair live and breathe the natural world, growing their own food, foraging as a way of life, making their own medicine, wildcrafting and sharing their knowledge and passion with those around them. They believe in building a strong community, that we are all one with each other and with nature itself. After 9 years in Squamish, the pair have recently relocated to Slocan where they continue their journey to explore, discover and share with others. It is through education and understanding of the natural world around us that we will come to see that conservation, sustainable practices and connection are the only way forward.

Tomas was born in the Czech Republic, where mushroom foraging is the national sport. A tradesman by day, he works with his hands and loves being creative. He has been honing his wildcrafting skills and expanding his knowledge base year after year in the Pacific Northwest and now in the Kootenays. His interests include geography and topography, backcountry adventure, hiking, gardening, woodworking and spending as much time as possible in the great outdoors.

Heather grew up in eastern Canada and transplanted eight years ago to follow her brother and a calling for the west coast. She has an entrepreneurial spirit and a hospitality and culinary background. She has been intentionally studying wild plants and herbs for over 10 years and has been growing and preserving her own food and medicine in her family tradition since she was young. Having focused primarily on physical wellness, she is currently studying the mind and spirit connection and how nature can provide healing on all levels.
